Current Exhibition: Portable Mind curated by Margaret Lanzetta: Steve DeFrank
Steve DeFrank is a painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Steve is an avid lucha libre fan and a not so good salsa dancer, but very enthusiastic. The quote “fiction is the lie that tells the truth.” sums up his approach to his work. In his own words, “Creating drawings based on sitcom homes that were so real I can recall each room from memory. These homes don’t exist and yet I spent more time in those homes than that of my friend’s. I unapologetically embrace all the formal skills of object making that engage old-fashioned, soul-baring individuality with absurdity, acknowledging the pleasure, pain, and awkwardness of being human.” Steve received his BFA from Maryland Art Institute, MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. His numerous awards include a senior Fulbright Fellowship to Mexico City, the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant from the Provincetown Museum and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award. Steve has had five solo shows and has been included in a ton of group shows.
